Ear Candling (Thermal Auricular)

What is ear candling?
Ear candling is a treatment, which involves a candle (a hollow tube of linen) being inserted into the ear.  The candle is around 10” long and tapered at the end for a comfortable fit in the ear.  The client lies on their side during the treatment with the therapist at the head side of the couch.  The candle is inserted into the ear.  A paper plate is lowered around the candle to help protect the client from any falling residue.  The candle is then lit.  The therapist is holding the candle at all times as it burns which can take around 10-15 minutes, depending on the condition of the ear.  The warmth of the flame and vapour from the candle gently goes down the candle and circulates in the ear canal.  No residue will fall in the client’s ear. This method helps to create a stimulating and soothing effect to the tissue in and around the ear.  The result is a stimulation of lymphatic drainage in the entire head and neck region.  The tubes of the ear and face are opened and relaxed improving drainage and helping to reduce pressure.  Also the blood circulation is stimulated to the head.

The Benefits

  • Sinusitis
  • Colds and flu
  • Swollen glands and sore throats
  • Earache
  • Lymphatic congestion
  • Snoring
  • Hearing problems
  • Balance problems
  • Pain or pressure in the ear when flying
  • Headaches and migraine

The treatment is performed on both ears and there is a massage to the head, neck and face after the treatment to also help increase lymphatic drainage.  The treatment usually takes around 45 minutes to complete.  For various conditions it is normally advised to have a course of treatments to get full benefit.  The length and frequency of the treatments will be discussed in consultation.
