Emotional Freedom Technique

What exactly is EFT?
EFT was developed in the US, during the early 1990’s by Gary Craig.   EFT are empowering (self) development tools. They are effective, relatively easy to learn, and can benefit almost any issue. Though still in its infancy EFT is a cousin of acupuncture, kinesiology and NLP.

What kind of things can EFT be applied to?
The following list is by no means extensive but EFT has successfully helped clients with the following:

  1. Food cravings, weight loss and body image problems
  2. Relationship issues
  3. Learning difficulties
  4. Self-esteem, including fear or public speaking
  5. Enhanced performance in sport
  6. Fears and phobias
  7. Emotions associated with serious disease
  8. Cigarette addiction
  9. Sadness, grief and loss
  10. PTSD

EFT works at an energetic level within the body. It is commonly known as, “tapping” because during EFT we lightly tap on a series of acupuncture points whilst focusing on a problem such as, a negative emotion or a limiting belief. This amazingly usually clears the negative emotional state, sometimes even in minutes! With EFT there are no known side effects - it is a very gentle therapy. However, one may experience tears and tiredness in the short term, when facing a particularly challenging issue. It is always advisable to work with a practitioner when experiencing major trauma, as he/she can rapidly move the client into a positive and relaxed state.

In EFT we focus on resolving why and where the love went missing. Often, people can re-frame themselves and move on without the help of an EFT Practitioner.  What is so fantastic about EFT is that it no longer matters who did what to who when. Arguably, the most impressive EFT is that done by experienced EFTers working with war veterans. By contrast, Basic EFT is simple enough for children to learn.

How does EFT work?
The underpinning belief in EFT is:
“The cause of all negative emotion is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”
Consider the stages of how a negative emotional or physical reaction occur:
Stage 1 – trauma
Stage 2 – disruption to the body’s energy system
Stage 3 – negative emotional or physical problem

Standard counselling and psychotherapy work focus on Stage 1 (traumatic memories) whereas modern medical procedures focus on Stage 3 (negative emotional or physical problems). Using EFT Stage 2 can be neutralised, thus destroying the link between the trauma and the negative emotional or physical problem. Do note here that the traumatic memory itself is not destroyed but the emotional intensity associated with the event is dramatically reduced. When dealt with correctly the problem will not re-surface later on.

Clever stuff!
